Week 14 - Sharing Success



Last Lecture Exercise

I have tremendously enjoyed these past 14 weeks in B 183:08. Any college in the world can teach you the fundamental Entrepreneurship. Any “How to Get Rich” book can give you step by step instructions to profit off of your million dollar idea.

However, as a student of Brigham Young University, you are blessed to receive the same temporal knowledge as the rest of the word, but also learn how God’s will for you relates to each endeavor. This course will guide you to greatness along a path of righteousness and integrity. The straight and narrow is not the easiest to follow at times; however, temporal greed is not worth the immense love of our Heavenly Father. All of our actions, including our professional endeavors should emulate the actions of Christ.

The scriptures warn us about the pursuit of wealth. D&C 68:31 states

Now, I, the Lord, am not well pleased with the inhabitants of Zion, for … they also seek not earnestly the riches of eternity, but their eyes are full of greediness.

Similarly, 1st Timothy 6:9 warns us

But they that will be rich fall into temptation and a snare, and into many foolish and hurtful lusts, which drown men in destruction and perdition

Brothers and Sisters, wealth is not a sin in and of itself. Neither is the pursuit of riches. Many of our latter-day church leaders have found great financial success in their life.



What is a sin; however, is to cast aside your fellow men. We are implored to use our wealth to support and lift up others. Tithing, fast offering, and donations are all examples of such acts. 

And after ye have obtained a hope in Christ ye shall obtain riches, if ye seek them; and ye will seek them for the intent to do good—to clothe the naked, and to feed the hungry, and to liberate the captive, and administer relief to the sick and the afflicted.” (Jacob 2:19.)

The wealthy have the great opportunity to administer to the needy. Blessed are those who have great wealth, greater blessed will be those who use that to serve.

The obligation to care for the poor is extensively taught throughout Christ’s ministry as well as in the Book of Mormon and the Bible.


The successful have an opportunity to lift others alongside them. If you find yourself the beneficiary of a million dollar idea, remember the words of Lord spoken in Mark 19, “… go and sell that thou hast, and give to the poor, and thou shalt have treasure in heaven: and come and follow me.”

B 283: 06 Lesson 4 Weekly Reflection

A great lesson learned this week was through Heather Evan’s case study. While Heather’s efforts were commendable, she failed to properly create a suitable business plan.   As a small business owner, it may seem helpful to seek guidance from other professionals through networking, books or the Internet. However, it is important to assess whether the advice is appropriate for your business. I think a major issue with Heather's plan was that she used generic advice to create a generic business plan. Each industry is unique and must be treated as such and planned for accordingly. Seeking business advice from successful people is beneficial, but specific details should be sought out from industry leaders. $100.00 Challenge Update As I have stated in some other assignments, by MOC commission business is more a formalization of a hobby I have. B 283: 06 Lesson 10 Weekly Reflection

Response to Reading In this weeks reading there was a particular paragraph that stood out to me, new information was added to a principle I was very familiar with. In Elder L. Tom Perry’s April 1987 General Conference talk, “United in Building the Kingdom of God”, he said: Now, we see that often this turning away from the Lord comes with prosperity… Although Jacob does not say it, this process can also work the other way. Those who are less fortunate begin to feel deprived. They become consumed by what they do not have, blaming others for their predicament and blaming the Lord. They, also, turn their hearts away from Him. In many teaching of the church, we are advised to avoid extremes and instead be moderate. This principle can be interpreted in politics, parenting styles, commitment to work, and many others.
