Response To This Weeks Reading During my time studying both secular and spiritual texts a very common theme gets brought up; our spiritual succession is far more important than our earthly progression. The natural man in each of us pulls our attention away from our Heavenly Father towards things such as material wealth, popularity and the “finer things” in life. While the desire for such things is not sinful, as children of God, we must not forget how fleeting these all are.   Our Heavenly Father sent us all to earth so that we may present him our love and devotion to him. The pursuit of earthly wealth can be disruptive to that. This sentiment reminds me of the LDS musical “My Turn on Earth”, where humanity is incorrectly taught to believe that earthly "treasures" are the key to living a fulfilling life, also that we will be given praise by our Father for our acquisition of material possessions. Response To This Weeks Reading Why do you think Randy Pausch was able to achieve so many of his childhood dreams? In Pausch’s lecture we shared what his childhood dreams where. Some were more realistic than other, but in reality, they were all rather lofty. Pausch shared with the audience all the steps it took to achieve his goals, such as achieving zero gravity. He divulges that during the process of achieving his dreams he encountered roadblocks, which he calls “brick walls”, repeatedly. He states his success was from overcoming all the processes and people who were figuratively working against him. The quickest way to never reach your goals is simply to give up the moment things get difficult. Pausch’s experience shows that kickback is not a sign of guaranteed failure, but rather an opportunity to demonstrate strength and determination. Do you feel that dreaming is important? I’m nearing the conclusion of the first week of my B 183 course. So far the assignments have been mainly rudimentary introduction assignments, so unfortunately I don’t have much to reflect or respond to. For my first entry, I want to put into writing my goals for this course and the semester as a whole. I am already a few days in, but I strongly believe I will benefit from creating a plan to go off of. In order to ensure my success, I plan to take my education more seriously. Though I am an online student, I want to present myself as if I was in the classroom. Mason Donovan wrote a book entitles “The Golden Apple: Redefining Work-Life Balance for a Diverse Workforce.” In the text he writes of the importance of dressing for success, even when working (or studying) in the privacy of your own home.
